Winter 2023-24
This site-specific durational project involved the cleaning and treating the black mould across the ceiling of a room I occupied for 3 years in a long standing squat in North London. That same winter, the issues surrounding black mould in rented and social housing came to the forefront of British media attention. The process of learning the best, safest recipes to treat black mould - from others’ experiences and trial and error led to me creating a document concisely gathering this information in one space which I have since shared back far and wide.
The act in itself of removing the mould was intensely physical and time intensive. Creating a deep, personal connection with those 35 m square of concrete through touch.
Now, after a long, continuous legal battle the building has been evicted, and stands empty. However, left better maintained, treated and sealed than it would’ve been without our occupation.
